Inside Your Pump
Problem:
The engine spins over but will not start.
Possible Causes:
1 - Bad glow plugs(if applicable).
2 - No fuel to cylinders.
3 - Clogged fuel return.
4 - No fuel to injection pump.
5 - Dirty fuel filter(s).
6 - Bad fuel supply pump.
7 - Dirty fuel tank filter.
8 - No voltage to fuel solenoid on injection pump(if applicable).
9 - Incorrect fuel.
10 - Pump timing incorrect.
11 - Injection pump malfunction.
12 - Air in fuel supply lines.
13 - Plungers in injection pump stuck.
Can't get any fuel out of your
pump? Can't get any fuel to
your injectors? The worst
thing you can do is to continue
spinning the engine over. All
you are doing is burning
money by damaging your
pump even further. When you
reach this point it's time to
stop and send your pump to us
for repairs.
Problem:
The engine starts but will not run at idle.
Possible Causes:
1 - Restricted fuel return.
2 - Bad glow plugs(if applicable).
3 - Pump timing incorrect.
4 - Bad fuel supply pump.
5 - Incorrect fuel.
6 - Bad fuel solenoid(if applicable).
7 - Injection pump malfunction.
8 - Air in fuel.
Problem:
When I decelerate or have to stop real fast the engine stalls.
Possible Causes:
1 - Idle speed to low.
2 - Bad flex ring(governor, if applicable).
3 - Binding in MIN-MAX block and throttle shaft(if applicable).
4 - Sticking metering valve or linkage inside of injection pump.
Problem:
The engine idles rough.
Possible Causes:
1 - Fuel pump timing retarded.
2 - Dirty fuel filter(s).
3 - Injection pump housing pressure to high.
4 - Injection line volume to low.
5 - Low opening pressure nozzles.
Problem:
When I crank my cold engine it idles rough, but as it warms it clears up.
(sometimes I see white smoke)
Possible Causes:
1 - Injector nozzles valves sticking open.
2 - Pump timing incorrect.
3 - Air in fuel.
4 - Bad glow plugs(if applicable).
5 - Bad fast idle solenoid(if applicable)
Problem:
The engine has lost power.
Possible Causes:
1 - Pump timing incorrect.
2 - Dirty fuel filter(s).
3 - Restricted fuel supply.
4 - Incorrect fuel.
5 - Bad injectors.
Problem:
The engine puts out black smoke.
Possible Causes:
1 - Bad injectors.
2 - Injection pump malfunction.
